Diane Bator Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
My name is Diane Bator and I am a Canadian mystery writer. Aside from mystery, I am also dabbling with fantasy and a YA novel, as well as writing plays. I’m a mom of three young men and work full time for a professional theatre.
How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?
Unpublished probably about 5-6 novels on my shelf waiting to be edited.
Half-finished, I’d say closer to 10! I have a lot of great ideas and notes in binders but have been focused on the published series for now. For sure there are 2-3 more series to come.
Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?
Diane Batormost recent book, The Conned Lady, is the fifth book and conclusion of my Wild Blue Mystery series. Where the first book, The Bookstore Lady, tells readers how Katie Mullins and Danny Walker first arrived in Packham, The Conned Lady wraps up their story and puts an end to Katie’s struggles with the bosses she’s been evading.
Diane Bator How do you develop your plots and characters?
I tend to write by the seat of my pants but also do a little plotting for the mystery elements. A plantser! (Cross between a pantser and a plotter.) My main method is to start with a character or even a situation and let the events unfold as I write. Characters seem to wander in and appear when needed, sometimes catching me off guard. They unfold like flower buds until I have to go back in edits and add things that have been mentioned later in the book.
It’s not everyone’s favorite way to write, but I find I don’t have to force traits, names, or even manner of speech. They mostly just come.
How do you get inspired to write?
While writing with three kids underfoot, I find I don’t always have time to sit and wait for inspiration. I trained myself to write in fifteen minute increments just to get in a scene or storyline. If I have a work in progress, it’s always in the back of my mind and usually a scene is just waiting to burst out when I get a chance to write it!
What are you currently working on?
A couple things. One is Dead Man’s Doll, the second book in my Sugarwood Mysteries.
The second is a whole new mystery I’m editing right now called Carved in Stone. Once my deadlines are out of the way for this year, I’ll be focusing on submitting it to a different publisher just for the fun of it!
What’s your advice for aspiring writers?
Write the whole first draft before you go back to edit. Your book will never get written if you focus on that “perfect” first sentence.
Don’t listen to the people who tell you to give up. Find other writers who will help and support as well as give you good advice.
What’s the best thing about being a writer?
I have a good excuse to daydream!
Seriously! How many other jobs can you get away with staring out a window all day or going for a long walk to mull over your work?
I also love all the great people I get to meet. Writers and readers.
Will you have a new book coming out soon?
The Conned Lady just came out in March 2022 and my second book in my Sugarwood Mystery series, Dead Man’s Doll, will come out in September 2022. There’s always another story to tell!
What is your preferred method to have readers get in touch with or follow you (i.e., website, personal blog, Facebook page, Goodreads, etc.) and link(s)?
