Here is an interview with author Kelly Florence.

Kelly Florence is an American author and screenwriter. Kelly Florence is co-author of five books. She is best known for her books The Science of Monsters, The Science of Women in Horror.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m Kelly Florence, co-author of five books: The Science of Monsters, The Science of Women in Horror, The Science of Stephen King, The Science of Serial Killers, and the forthcoming The Science of Witchcraft.

How many hours a day do you write?

Several! When I am inspired or when I learn something new I make sure to jot it down and follow the thread until completion.

How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?

Our (my and my co-author, Meg Hafdahl‘s) next work is partially finished. It’s The Science of Agatha Christie. I also have two more non-fiction book projects in the works.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?

We have averaged one every six months!

Where did you get the idea for your recent book?

We love all things horror so it was a natural fit to research witchcraft and mysteries.

Read: How to start a blog with the most profitable niches?

How did you develop your plots?

With our fiction projects, Meg and I get inspired by an idea and brain storm the plot! Meg is more of a “pantser” and I am more of a “plotter.”

How do you select the names of your characters?

We are always inspired by people in our own lives! Many times, too, we will look up names that translate to meanings that make sense for our plot.

What is your favorite childhood book?

I always loved “Help! I’m a Prisoner in the Library!” and “Bunnicula.”

What other authors are you friends with, and how do they help you become a better writer?

So many writers inspire me and we have become friends including Mary Kay McBrayer, Shane Hawk, and Kara Lee Corthron. They all are amazing in their own way and challenge me to be better.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Take feedback, read, read, read, and set aside time for yourself to write.

What’s the best thing about being a writer?

With our “Science of…” series, part of my work is to watch horror movies or read horror novels! That’s time well spent in my book and I can’t believe I get to do this!

Will you have a new book coming out soon?

The Science of Witchcraft will be coming out October 4, 2022.
