Diann Floyd Boehm Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I am Diann Floyd Boehm, and I write children’s books and young adult historical fiction. I live in Texas, USA, and enjoy gardening, walking, and singing. New things I am learning to do for fun are sewing and piano. I have three grown children and one handsome grandchild.
Diann Floyd Boehm How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?
Unpublished: I have about ten stories ready to be edited.
Unfinished: I am working on the Young Adult Historical fiction follow-up to Rise a Girl’s Struggle for More! The title for this one is TBD. But, all my energy is going to this book.
Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?
The YA historical fiction is based on my grandma Ruby’s young life before she married. I am lucky that my mom and grandma were always telling family stories about their own lives.
How do you develop your plots and characters?
I have the basic idea- the message I want to convey to the reader. Then-I, I just started writing.
This method is sometimes referred to as a discovery writer. After the first draft, I begin mapping the story out; then, the editing begins!
Now I have become a cross methodology writer, discovery, and planner.
Diann Floyd Boehm How do you get inspired to write?
Inspiration comes to me at various times, while I am gardening, in church, on a walk, and in the middle of the night. I have to be open to recognizing the thoughts when they come. So I keep a notebook to write the ideas down when I hear them.
I usually write a thought or tell myself what I wish could happen, and I need to write a new chapter in the morning.
When I wake up, I do not do anything else but write for an hour or till the rough chapter is down.
What are you currently working on?
I have a new Moonling Adventure; it is in the cue for illustrations. The Moonlings discover birds
in various parts of the world. I am also working on a toddler book. I can tell you it is about
Dragons. My daughter Katherine is the artist for both books.
What’s your advice for aspiring writers?
When you get an idea, jot it down so you don’t lose your thought. Then when you have time, sit
down and write, write, write. Do not worry about grammar; perfect sentences just write. You can
worry about the rest later. You will discover how easy it is to trust your mind to be free and let
the words flow.
What’s the best thing about being a writer?
Receiving emails from parents and teachers telling me how much they enjoyed the story.
Will you have a new book coming out soon?
I have two books coming in the Fall, and the titles have not yet been released. I will have a Title
reveal hopefully this summer.
