Here is an interview with  author Freddy Cruz

Freddy Cruz is a Houston area media personality, last heard on the Marconi Award winning 104.1 KRBE. He is also an author, philanthropist, lover of new music and old books, and the host of the Book This with Freddy Cruz podcast.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am a storyteller and podcaster from Houston, Texas. In a previous life, I spent more than twenty years as a radio personality and producer.

How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?

I have one completed manuscript that may never see the light of day, one manuscript that’s about sixty pages longhand that’ll never see the light of day, and two pages of a manuscript that I think about quite often but will likely toss in the garbage.

Q: Where did you get the idea for your recent book?

They Canceled the DJ is inspired by actual events—but NOT based on a true story. The incident in question centers around a buddy of mine who was backstage at a music festival. He thought he and a female photographer had hit it off and before he could get her number, she ended up walking off with a musician (they ended up getting married). So I thought to myself, how could I make this into a story but really, REALLY make the main character suffer? After about a year and a half, we have AC.

If you didn’t write, what would you do for work?

Chef.

Have you read anything that made you think differently about fiction?

A: All of Chuck Palahniuk’s work. His book Consider This: Moments in My Writing Life After Which Everything Was Different blew my mind. I had and continue to gobble up podcast interviews and YouTube videos with Chuck—call me a fanboy and I’d agree. But this book really did a number on me.

What is your favorite childhood book?

Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein. Sick is my favorite from the collection.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

DO THE WORK. Don’t just sit and wait for the muse to appear. Sit your bottom in the chair, open up a blank doc (or notebook if you write longhand) and write. Write as if you’re already a bestselling author. Write as if you have a hard deadline and if you miss it, you’ll get fired. Write as if your life depends on it. Don’t be the person who, on their death bed, regrets not having shared their story with the world. So put in the work and maybe, just maybe, one person will buy your book. Or two. Maybe a half dozen. Perhaps “the right person” will find your amazing novel and their tweet or blog post will go viral and hundreds of thousands of people will pick up a copy. But none of this is possible if you don’t start from a blank page. So write!
