Utopia Café is a satirical novel by David Hejna that is both thought-provoking and enjoyable, set in a future where social justice and equality are non-existent. The political scene is eloquently shown, and it symbolizes the conservatives’ loss of power in a “soft coup.” The country is impoverished and oppressed by ruthless authoritarianism, in which the elite prosper while the majority suffer. While people want free expression and equal chances, the political police are brutal in their repression. No one wants to be transferred to the Alaskan Reserve, which is a sort of gulag for state adversaries. However, an underground resistance is forming, and Izzy, a college senior, is a part of it. When she meets Tom, a rising star in the one-party system, she is determined to question his political beliefs and possibly recruit him into the underground movement. It turns out that, like most others at the time, he is already secretly pessimistic, but he must be cautious about showing his cynicism to Izzy because he risks losing his social credit and standing in the party.

David Hejna presents a dark political future for a country that once radiated democracy, revealing what happens when politics loses its representational nature and becomes partisan. This is satirical fiction influenced by current events, and it comes across as a compelling warning of what can happen to the United States if party politics ignore people’s interests. Utopia Café is loaded with substantial and strong social and political commentary, providing food for thought for the reader while investigating how easily society may descend into cynicism. The characters are well-developed and believable, and the environment transforms into a major player in the plot, influencing readers in a variety of ways.
