Review: My Heart Went Walking by Sally Hanan

by Sally HananUna found out she was pregnant in Donegal in 1983. After her mother informed her that she would have to give up the baby, Una confided in her Mam. This was a big family and her mother would not allow anyone to shame the Gallagher family name in public. For several years, nobody could find Una, who was fighting for her own life and the life of her unborn child. The Gallagher girls were unfortunately the victims of a cruel twist of fate. When Una and Ellie ran into each other again, it was through no fault of their own. If her secret were revealed, it could either break or strengthen her family. Is she going to come clean? In the midst of it all, is there room for forgiveness? To learn more, pick up a copy of Sally Hanan’s My Heart Went Walking.

Sally Hanan’s novel, My Heart Went Walking, was deeply moving. I enjoyed the plot because it was new and had a lot of layers to it. The dialogue and narratives emitted an intense intensity that I associate with the Irish. The well-developed and relatable characters made the story both realistic and emotionally charged. In addition, I had a good time. In my heart, I loved Una because she was a strong woman who was willing to give her life for those she cared about. I’m a big fan of Ellie and Catherine, though. The light they shone on others was all because they were selfless. Before the story ended, I had nominated Ellie for sainthood several times. Sally Hanan did an excellent job of telling this story, and her use of slang made it even more enjoyable for me (eejit, git, wain, etc.). And I’d like to read more from this talented author in the future.
