Interview with author Gary Turner

The son of a career soldier, Gary developed a keen interest in military history at an early age. His family lived in various places in Canada and was also crowned for three years in Germany. Over the years, he developed a passion for writing short stories and essays. Some of these essays have been published in a national journal. Gary Turner’s grandfather fought in the Great War, and four decades ago, Gary Turner began researching Canada’s involvement in that conflict. Gary Turner One of his other obsessions, which began 50 years ago, is riding a motorbike, quite naturally without his parents knowing. In 2011, he toured the old Western Front in Belgium and France in his BMW. This life’s journey led to the sprouting of her new novel, I’ll Take My Chances.

Mr. Gary Turner, Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Son of a career soldier, lived on several bases in Canada, as a teen, lived in Germany 1969-72. Life long history buff began riding motorcycles fifty years ago

How many hours a day do you write?

Do not write daily as still working as a trucker

How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?

Published the fictional historical trilogy “I’ll Take My Chances”, one book now underway with two more outlined.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?

The first book took two and a half years to write the first draft, then nearly four years to rewrite twelve times, and three edits, working full time slowed down the process

Where did you get the idea for your recent book?

It grew out of a daily journal I kept during a nine-week motorcycle tour of western Europe. Visiting my grandfather’s birthplace in England kicked off the idea of recording some family history.

How did you develop your plots?

Used a loosely based family history set against events of the 19^th and 20^th centuries.

How do you select the names of your characters?

Mostly used names of family, friends, and historical figures.

Mr. Gary Turner, If you didn’t write, what would you do for work?

I am a trucker who wishes to retire in several months which will allow me to devote more time to writing.

How did you get inspired to write your recent book?

A life-threatening health crisis was an excellent reminder time does not wait.

What is your favorite childhood book?

That one is easy, The Hardy Boys.

Have you read anything that made you think differently about fiction? I read primarily history and wove that into writing a mostly fictional story of my family.

Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with bad or good ones?

As a new author, I read reader reviews, plus those of reviewers. Luckily, there has not been one decidedly negative review that helps motivate me.

What other authors are you friends with, and how do they help you become a better writer?

A close friend has published several history books; we critique and encourage one another.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Get started and write about what you know. Perhaps most importantly, find a good editor.

What was the best money you ever spent as a writer?

The best money I spent as a writer was buying a new computer, although I’m far from being techy.

What’s the best thing about being a writer?

Plain and simple, I like stories.

Will you have a new book coming out soon?

I plan to have a second book finished next year.

What is your preferred method to have readers get in touch with or follow you (i.e., website, personal blog, Facebook page, Goodreads, etc.) and link(s)?

After going down some dead-end roads, we now have a web page, have begun working with a publicist and attend book fairs and markets.
