Mandy Eve Barnett, Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Mandy Eve Barnett My discovery of the writing craft was later in life, after experimenting with many other creative avenues throughout my life. It was a new skill in a new country for me, after immigrating from England to Canada. Once I found this creative outlet it soon became an all-encompassing passion.

I am a multi-genre author writing for all ages with a basic theme throughout my narratives of love, in all its forms, from parental, to lover, to friendship, to the world around us with its inhabitants, both flora and fauna.

My ‘new’ land has added such experiences to my already sizable knowledge of continents (I lived on three!), firsthand visits to multiple historical and ancient sites, life experiences from business owners to motherhood and beyond, and the magic of folklores and fairy folk. All of this has given me a vast well of inspiration to draw from for my stories.

Mandy Eve Barnett How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?

If we are talking about complete novels, I have three unpublished ones and three half-finished ones. This does not count the multitude of stories and ideas populating my laptop.

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

I need to answer this in two parts, I think. My last published novel, The Commodore’s Gift began life as a writing exercise at a writing retreat. We were given random story titles and I wrote approximately eight thousand words. My title was The Toymaker.

The story then stayed on the back burner as I worked on other manuscripts. When I returned the main protagonist in the short story soon became a minor player, overshadowed by a determined force, a woman called Owena, in a steampunk world.

The idea for my current project came to me almost fully formed, which is hard for some people to believe. I was struggling to think of something to write for National Novel Writing month when a series of crime/detective stories came to me. A flash of inspiration, for sure. I am now in the midst of writing this trilogy, The Delphic Murders.

How do you develop your plots and characters?

Mandy Eve Barnett, I have a two-pronged attack on my story writing. My initial process is to let the story flow and allow my imagination to take over, visualizing the scenes like a movie in my head. Then depending on the complexity of the story, I note down character traits, sub-plots, plot arcs,s, etc. as the characters become more familiar to me.

Some would say this is backward but I am happier to let my characters steer me within the narrative and not stall my writing with details that can be ‘fixed’ in the editing/revision stage.

How do you get inspired to write?

There are many ways to inspire, but for me, writing prompts are a great tool to get unstuck or to spark an idea. I also go on frequent road trips/writing retreats, which are always inspiring. A new location, no interruptions, and a scenic view are the best possible circumstances to write about.

What are you currently working on?

A detective trilogy, The Delphic murders, covers three Albertan cities, three female detectives, and a puzzling murder case. Although, I have written a two-book series this is my first trilogy and it is a fun writing journey.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

I could list a lot, but these are my main ones. Always be open to learning your craft, ask for advice and take courses, be part of your local and virtual writing community, find a writing group, and above all write as much as you can. Practice makes perfect.

What’s the best thing about being a writer?

The ability to make your imagination come alive for you, but also to take your readers to a place of your creation. I know it is my legacy for future generations.

Will you have a new book coming out soon?

As I have mentioned I am working on a trilogy so until I am confident that all three books are cohesive, the plot arc works, and the nitty-gritty editing and revisions are done, it is too soon to say when I will have them published.

What are your preferred method to have readers get in touch with or follow you (i.e., website, personal blog, Facebook page, Goodreads, etc.) and link(s)?

Actually, any of the above, but to be serious probably the website is the easiest.
