Volvo’s new Polestar 2 is the company’s first all-electric vehicle. It has superb driving characteristics, robust technology supported by Google, and an easy-to-use UI. Even with available tax credits, it’s a touch pricey, and it’s on the smaller side in terms of internal space.
The Polestar 2 features a nice interior and easy-to-use technology, but its mediocre range doesn’t compensate for its unusual design.
The Polestar 2 (2022) is available with one or two electric motors. The automobile with the single-motor layout has front-wheel drive and has a driving range of around 270 miles. The second dual-motor has a shorter range, but it compensates with all-wheel drive and much greater power for faster acceleration.
What Is New in 2022?
Polestar created a new front-drive layout and significantly lowers the lineup’s costs for 2022. The new single-motor, front-drive variant has an EPA-rated range of 270 miles, while the dual-motor vehicle has a range of 249 miles. The 2 also has additional individual choices and the opportunity to select certain packages rather than having them all bundled together. Those who choose for the loaded Plus option will get a slew of luxury features, as well as a newly installed mechanical heat pump, which Polestar claims may increase the hatch’s projected range by up to 10%. The dual-motor Polestar 2’s horsepower and pound-feet of torque will be increased from 408 to 476 and 487 to 502, respectively, via an over-the-air upgrade.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The Polestar 2’s single 231-hp motor is located at the front of the vehicle, as opposed to the rear axle of models with dual all-wheel-drive motors.
Currently, the Polestar 2 is only available with a single powertrain configuration – a pair of electric motors, one on each axle, driving all four wheels directly. The total output is listed at 402bhp, with 487lb ft of torque available at zero revolutions per minute. The motors are powered by a 78kWh segmented battery pack that runs down the floor. The WLTP range is 292 miles.
The Polestar 2’s performance is unquestionably adequate to convey the outstanding first impression of a well-equipped electric vehicle. That is, if they have not previously driven a premium Tesla. As is the case with all electric vehicles, acceleration is rapid and comfortable, but lacking the somewhat off-kilter sensation of a Model 3 Performance. On paper, it will accelerate to 62mph in 4.7 seconds and achieve a peak speed of 127mph (Polestar has chosen not to enforce a 112mph speed limitation, like Volvo does).
Interior, Comfort and Technology
The inside of the Polestar 2 is basic yet elegant, combining wood, cloth, and plastic. It has a contemporary appearance, with clean lines, a restrained color palette, and minimum switchgear. The 2 has a few aesthetic cues with its Volvo siblings, such as the steering-wheel buttons and knurled start knob, but the overall look is less cluttered. Polestar wraps the interior in eco-friendly vegan cloth to complement the electric drivetrain (though, you can get leather if you really want it). The power-operated liftgate provides access to a rather spacious cargo compartment of 14 cubic feet.
Range, Charging, and Battery Life
The platform’s electric version incorporates a 75.0-kWh lithium-ion battery pack beneath the floor. Polestar says that the electrical system offers fast charging up to 150 kilowatts, which can recharge a dead battery to 80% in 40 minutes. The single-motor variant has a range of around 270 miles, while the dual-motor model has a range of approximately 249 miles on a single charge.
MPG and running costs
You should be able to get an 80 percent charge back into the battery in less than 30 minutes with the 150kW rapid charging capabilities of Polestar. For a complete charge from empty, the Polestar’s 78kWh battery should provide 72.5kWh of real useable energy. The 2 has a real-world driving range of 232 miles, thanks to its efficiency of 3.2 miles per kWh.
This car has an attractive cabin and straightforward technology, but its average range does not entirely compensate for its strange styling.
